It is native to Missouri and grows in prairies, glades, dry open woods and thickets throughout the state. The shrub has many thin branches and a thick root system with fibrous root hairs close to the surface and stout, burlish, woody roots that reach deep into the earth. The shrub has oval clusters of tiny, fragrant, white flowers in spring.
