An upright Japanese Maple similar in size and habit to 'Bloodgood' but with redder leaves in spring that contrast beautifully with deep purple almost black stems. The leaf color darkens as the season progresses to a deep wine-purple to almost black, developing a shine that shimmers in the light. The leaves hold their color well through summer however may turn to to bronze or olive green for a short period towards the end of summer. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall all the leaves on the tree turn to a brilliant bright scarlet red. Slow-moderate growing
