A deciduous shrub native to forest edges, moist slopes, and woodland openings in the southeastern United States. It produces clusters of spectacular purple berries in the fall and winter, which are eaten by birds and deer, helping to distribute the seeds. The plant has a naturally loose and graceful arching habit and its leaves are mildly serrated and fragrant.
